Been down in Corolla, NC

September 26th, 2002

Been down in Corolla, NC for the week at our annual company retreat. Every day has been mentally challenging and yet somehow fun. Tomorrow morning we wrap up, pack up and head back to DC. Went swimming in the ocean a couple times, and managed to squeek out a few minutes in the hot tub between the work days.

Photos from the Copan Ruins:

The ballcourt. All the area in the photo that is now grass used to be a painted stucco floor. It literally covered the entire surface of the plain. Like many Mayan cities, Copan is built layer upon layer and there is an exposed cut that is about 15 – 18 meters tall.

The symbol of Copan. The bat is in heiroglyphs all over the city and has made it on to the 100 Lempira note.

A cool hunk of sculpture with a stork headdress off of a facad of one of the buildings.

Claudia and an ancestor.

More sculpture.

Heiroglyphic staircase with the story of the city. Only the first 9 rows are in meaningful order. The rest of the staircase collapsed and was rebuilt haphazardly.

I’m back. Uneventful flights. Conference went well. The trip to the Mayan ruins at Copan was amazing (I’ll post pictures soon). That part of Honduras is a pretty cool part of the world and so close, too.

Just a quick update. The conference is going well. People are interested in what I have to say and I’m fielding good questions.

Went out last night with Cristina’s family to a wonderful restaurant. There was a torrential rain last night and the power cut out a few times, but such is life here.

Tomorrow’s more presentations and then Saturday is Copan and the Mayan ruins.

Well, I made it down

September 11th, 2002

Well, I made it down here just fine. Had a very early flight out of National Airport (sunrise over the Potomac is pretty) and a tight connection in Miami, but it was all over in 5 hours. I’m used to the FIRST leg of my trip being an 8 hour hop to Europe and THEN another flight to get to the final destination. This was quite a treat.

Hotel is fine, workshop is good, although it turns out that some of the attendees had trouble getting visas and so my audience has been cut down to about 4 people. (There are two tracks at the workshop, and clearly the other track is larger). Still, there may be stragglers from the other sessions come in.

Tonight a couple of us are going out with Cristina’s family for a nice dinner.
