Setting up a new location

November 30th, 2002

Andy has me set up with a new blog location on his server. The software used to drive this is a little more configurable than what i was previously using. Does it matter? Probably not. This is something new to play with and that’s good enough for me.

Lots of activity today here.

November 30th, 2002

Lots of activity today here. I redid the colors & the scheme of the site (clearly). I also added perma-links for each entry, created a FOAF file, and automated my blogroll.

All this got started checking out Mark Pilgrim’s tool to recommend further reading by working some magic on the list of sites that I read.

From dive into mark/November 26, 2002. Why syndication is not publication. Interesting, well thought out.

I can understand what both sides of this argument are getting at. RSS is XML. XHTML is XML. Given that XML can get styled & transformed into almost anything, it is reasonable to ask the question if one (RSS or XHTML) can substitute for the other.

Mark’s argument based on practicality is hard to beat, though.

November 24th, 2002

To start with, it is pretty irresponsible of a paper to print an article that postulates what a leading religious figure would or would not approve. It is doubly so in a country like Nigeria. Even so, people should not have died over this.

LAGOS (Reuters) – The death toll in Nigerian ethnic violence sparked by the Miss World (news – web sites) beauty pageant has risen to 175 from 105 on Friday morning, the President of the Nigerian Red Cross said on Sunday.

Emmanuel Ijewere said that violence continued on Sunday, despite a decision on Saturday to move the finale of the pageant from the Nigerian capital Abuja to London.

“The papers are reporting 200 dead, but our estimate would be slightly less than that. We are talking of about 175,” said Ijewere.

About 12,000 people have so far been made homeless and the number of injured in hospital is between 1,100 and 1,200, he said.

The violence began on Wednesday when Muslims reacted angrily to comments on the Miss World beauty pageant in a national newspaper.
