Uh oh…
bq. As is typical… it is too early to denote exact snowfall accumulations. This storm has potential to leave behind several inches of snow. However… it is unlikely that this storm will be as strong as the storm that paralyzed the region during presidents day weekend.

I’ve been playing around tonight with “Knoppix Linux”:http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html, a complete operating system (with applications!) that loads from a CD-ROM. It doesn’t require space on your hard disk, it doesn’t install anything either. It is intended as a demo, I guess, but it is so full featured that I have to wonder what is lacking.

So Uganda is still delayed. Now it looks as if I’ll be going to “Malawi”:http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/africa/malawi/ and Ethiopia for the last two weeks of March.
To get to Malawi I have to fly through South Africa. There is a direct flight from Atlanta to Jo’burg and it is 15 hours in the air. That’s a loooong flight.
The “Lonely Planet”:http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/africa/malawi/ summarizes Malawi like this:
bq. The tourist brochures bill Malawi as ‘the warm heart of Africa,’ and for once the hype is true. Malawi’s scenery is gorgeous and varied and Malawians tend to be extremely friendly toward travellers. It’s a real nature-lover’s destination: lots of national parks and game reserves, mountain hiking and plateau trekking and the massive Lake Malawi, great for diving, boating or lazing about. The country’s reliable transport and compact size make getting about a snap. A broad range of accommodation and activities makes it possible to have a great time whether you’re pinching pennies or blowing the bank.
Good authors. Makes me wish I had more that a scant week to stay there and explore. This is the country where Stanley found Dr. Livingston, after all!
The Lonely Planet also has plenty about “Ethiopia”:http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/africa/ethiopia/index.htm. This sounds like another place where I could stay for a while and explore. Frankly, there haven’t been many places I’ve been where I wouldn’t have stayed and explored. What can I say?

Not since the “great storm” of 1996 can I remeber the Government shutting down due to weather. Well, it happened today. We also have a snow day at work!

The Culinary Institute of America : Food Enthuiasts offers classes ranging up to a week long for regular folks who just want to learn to cook better. It looks like some of these could be fun. The week-long “Boot Camps”:http://www.ciachef.edu/enthusiasts/bootcamp.html look pretty cool ‘cuz you get a chef’s outfit, too!

The final tally is 16.5 inches of snow over the course of the storm. Pretty freaking impressive.

CityBlogs.com:
bq. I started devouring the local listings guides to find more events: the Village Voice listings, the Time Out NY events calendar, the New Yorker’s Goings On About Town. I found the hundreds of events in the listings overwhelming: what I really wanted was someone to find the most interesting events and tell me which ones to go to. I wanted that someone to be an expert in their field. And I wanted that someone to cover niche categories that just weren’t in the local event listings: jazz jam sessions in the Village, kickboxing matches in Queens, or Haitian dance classes near Union Square.
bq. In short, I wanted a local events blog. And so, Cityblogs.com was born.
This is a cool idea! I wonder if we’ll get something like in the DC area.

Artificial Ants – Microcontent News, a Corante.com Microblog
I read the book he’s referring to a number of years ago. Interesting analogy, though about people tracking and finding news stories like ants find food. There’s something cool that could go on here, but I’m not quite able to put my finger on it yet. Of course, the problem with this is that only the big sources of news would be found and it would actively keep eyes away from other sources.
Ooh, I just read a little further. He’s a Dartmouth guy, too.
