Ack!

June 27th, 2003

I just realized how long it had been since I posted anything. I’ve gone blank again. Well, in a week or so that won’t be a problem. On the 4th I jump on the plane again to head to Croatia (July 5 – 8) and Macedonia (July 9 – 11). This will be a repeat trip to Macedonia, but the first time in Croatia. Of course I’ll take the digital camera and I’ll try to find the time and place to post a couple pictures.

Otherwise, it has been bloody hot and I’ve had meetings, so I’ve been in coat and tie on the hottest days of the year! No fair!

Microsoft: No new versions of IE for Mac | CNET News.com

bq. Microsoft said Friday that it is halting development of future Macintosh versions of its Internet Explorer browser, citing competition from Apple Computer’s Safari browser.

This is too bad, because IE for the Mac is/was a good browser and pretty well supports the standards that are supposed to make the web universal and accessable.

Simon Willison: Using bookmarklets to experiment with CSS

bq. by far the most useful for learning CSS are test styles and edit styles. test styles opens a popup window in which you can type CSS rules that will be applied instantly to the page you are viewing, while edit styles does the same thing but pre-populates the window with the style sheets of the current site, allowing you to edit them in place. ancestors is also useful; it shows the element hierarchy of the element your mouse is currently over, which can help you see what selector you need to use to modify that element’s style. I cannot emphasize enough how powerful this is for working with CSS; using test styles I was able to redesign this site entirely in less than half an hour!

Wet Summer

June 8th, 2003

From the June 8 Washington Post:

bq. Much of the Washington region spent yesterday in fear of flooding as heavy rain — about two inches in many spots…

bq. The London-like weather has become too familiar in the Washington region this spring. Seven of the past eight Saturdays have been rainy, cooler than normal or, almost always, both. Before you blame some bizarre weekend curse, however, hear out John Dlugoenski, an AccuWeather meteorologist.

bq. “Two rainy days, two days of okay weather — it’s just a cyclical pattern, and it continues. Every Saturday it seems to rain. You could probably say it rained every Wednesday as well.”

bq. Yes, according to AccuWeather data, seven of the past eight Wednesdays were lousy.

Next trip

June 4th, 2003

It looks like I’ll be leaving on July 4 to go to Croatia for two days, then back to Macedonia for a couple days. I doubt I’ll get any chance to hang out on the Croatian coast after all. Ah well! I was looking forward to seeing Dalmatia or Istria. Next time.
